New to The Bangor Daily News!

Hi Everyone!

I’m excited to be joining your blogging community!  It looks like I’m in good company.  I’ve been working on Happy New Lear for over a year- I started right before Alex and I got married. It’s been my own little outlet to share with my family and friends across the country and also a way to build a community with those who share similar interests.

My husband and I live near Portland with our little French/English bulldog, Walter. I’m a photographer and he is a writer/musician.  We’ve been in our home a little over a year now and love our little oasis.  We’re both kids at heart and we still feel like we are in a house without parents home.  It all seems too good to be true.

I love crafting and trying new recipes so you’ll see a lot of that here as well as book reviews and seasonal events.  I look forward to getting to know you all through your blogs and maybe some convos.   I’d love to hear from you!

Thanks!

Lauren

Vino, Vida, Vici

I wined, I saw, I conquered!  Alex and I shared a lovely evening at home with friends and family while we hosted a Wine Shop at home event.  Renee Curtis was our wine educator for the evening and walked us through the subtleties and nuances of three sweet whites and three bold/spicy reds.  We paired these with a few interesting bites to change the palate.   Good times were had by all and we were happy to enjoy our “new to us” deck furniture donated by Alex’s wonderful parents.

I also got to do a craft I’ve been saving for about a year now- Tiki wine bottles!  I got the design from Design Sponge.

Dollhouse

I had a beautiful blue and white Victorian dollhouse my mom once gave me.  Over the years it fell into disrepair.  When it arrived at my new house from my mother’s basement, it looked like this:

I probably hadn’t seen it in 20 years and it was painful to see it like this.  Right then I decided to fix ‘er up.

Now, I’ve restored it to its original condition, more or less.

My next plan is to improve upon it.  I’m thinking some wall paper, more furniture, new carpet, etc.  You might also see this house make an appearance in my Alice in Wonderland shoot with Lola Studios.  Stay tuned!

On a side note:  My mom and I wanted to put together a gingerbread lighthouse together.  We didn’t have time to design that, so we got a Disney Cinderella castle instead.  We got that and a bunch of fun candies at Cracker Barrel to decorate it with.  That was definitely a highlight of the holidays!

Homeowners!

Yesterday Alex and I closed on our first home.  We are both in quite a daze, but also very excited.  I have not officially had a home to call my own since I was 18 and was preparing to leave for college.  Since then I have bounced around from dorm rooms to part time stays in Atlanta, Indiana, Virginia, New York, and Maine.  In each of those places I made a huge effort to create a domestic environment around me, but it always lacked a certain something- permanence.  I am proud to say that after years of moving around- that I have found a home in Maine with with my almost husband (10 days!).

This is a huge step for Alex as well.  He has lived in his same apartment for the last 11 years.  At one point he even worked at a newspaper located directly under his apartment.  It is now a sandwich shop and there are kids drinking soda where he once wrote under deadline.

We’ve looked for about a year and a half now and I was starting to give up hope that “our house” was out there.  We came close to perfect with one a few months ago only to discover it was under contract and hadn’t had the status changed.  That was heartbreaking until we found this home.  Nothing had even come close to this home and it has all the features we wanted.  He wanted a man cave, I wanted him to have a man cave, I wanted a 2 car garage- saves on scrape down time in the morning- December to April ;), we both wanted offices, a place for his comic collection and a place for my photo studio (www.lola-studios.com, more on that later).

So here we are during the first moments of realizing ownership.

We camped out there for our first night!

Happy New Lear?

I’m new to the blogging scene and I will be new to a lot of things pretty soon.  In less than 5 weeks I will be a newlywed, a new wife, new home owner, and newly honeymooned.  On top of all that I’ve just started a 6 week RAW/VEGAN diet.  I love to try new things, so I thought I’d try blogging as well.

I took some time to think of the best name for my blog and I was hoping for newly.com for awhile, however, it was not available.  Just as I was about to purchase newlyblog.com, I thought of newlylear.com, Lear being my soon to be surname.  So, it hit me, happynewlear!  My betrothed, Alex, proposed to me on New Year’s Eve at midnight 2010.  Not only was that a Happy New Year, but I will soon be a happy new Lear 🙂  Yea!

Alex and Lauren 12/31/10

I hope to prove to be someone you look forward to hearing from weekly, whether it be about wedding prep, marital bliss, conquering new home chores/projects, DIYing, my new adventures with my raw diet, and cooking for my veggie loathing other half.

See you soon!

~Lauren
